Type 1 Diabetes has hit home for me as it has for over 3 million Americans. It is an autoimmune disease that destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. My mother has had type 1 diabetes for over 50 years.
Having witnessed such a devastating disease with constant lows and highs in my mom’s blood glucose levels, I have been following the research at Faustman Lab at Massachusetts General Hospital. I am truly passionate about Dr. Denise Faustman's research with the BCG vaccination. In human clinical trials, it eliminated some of the destroying T Cells, which prohibit the beta cells from producing insulin. The hope is to trigger beta cell growth to produce insulin. BCG is also in research for other diseases such as Crohn's disease, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and multiple sclerosis.
